Florence

Florence, Italy is the perfect city for a day trip. It is possible to (briefly) see all of the main tourist attractions in Florence in just one day. Of course, I recommend that you spend more time in Florence to get a real feel for it. However, if time is not on your side, here are some suggested things to do/see for your day in the wonderful city of Florence!

You will most likely be arriving by train to Firenze Santa Maria Novella which is perfect because it’s in the centre of the city and Florence is an extremely walkable city. Below are the things to see in order with a map at the end to show the best route (via Google Maps!)

David by Michelangelo

At the Accademia Gallery, you can admire the perfection of the most famous statue in Florence, and perhaps, in the entire world: Michelangelo’s David. There is often long lines to enter as visitors wait to buy their tickets. For this reason, you should prebook your tickets ahead of time – you want to make the most of your day in Florence, not spend it waiting in a line. By booking ahead, you can access the gallery through a separate, reserved entrance for a specific date and time! This can be done online or via phone.

Piazza del Duomo - Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore

In this piazza is the beautiful and absolutely breathtaking Duomo of Florence. The mere size of this duomo will blow you away. Arrive early in the morning to get the best pictures, without other tourists in your shots. You can also enter the Duomo to truly experience all of its beauty. Once again, it’s best to buy tickets in advance so you won’t have to wait in line!

Piazza della Signoria

This beautiful piazza is a must see. This piazza has been the centre of political life in Florence since the 14th century. It is filled with various sculptures and there is a replica of Michelangelo’s David, as well as a beautiful fountain to explore. Take your time walking around, there is so much history to take in here!

Ponte Vecchio

The most famous and oldest bridge in Florence! When you think of Florence, this bridge is definitely what would come to mind. Ponte Vecchio is a bridge like none other. It was built in 1345 as the first bridge over the Arno River to be used as a system of defence. However, today this bridge is known for the charming shops along it! There is everything from jewellers, art sellers and antique boutiques.

Piazzale Michelangelo

In this square you can get the best view of Florence! It is a little bit of a hike up but it is well worth the effort. Spot the Duomo in all its glory amongst the other buildings that do not even compare to its size. This is the most magical spot to catch the sunset!

Best Food in Florence

Gelato: Gelateria La Carraia – very famous gelateria in Florence and it definitely does live up to the hype. It’s up there for one of the best gelatos I’ve EVER had (ps. I have had A LOT of gelato throughout Italy). Be sure to try some traditional Italian flavours such as, pistachio, nocciola (hazelnut), stracciatella (milk based gelato with chocolate pieces), limone (lemon) and tiramisu!

Lunch: Osteria All’antico Vinaio – a delicious famous sandwich shop!

Dinner: Trattoria Sabatino – a family run resturant that offers homestyle cooking (many typical Tuscan dishes!) at very humble prices.

Apretivo: Signorvino – although there are locations all over Italy, the view of the Arno River from this one does not compare. There is a HUGE wine selection so you can try a bunch of local Tuscan wines while having some appetizers.
